On October 4, 2013, shortly after 2:00 a.m., Kanawha County Sheriff’s Deputies and Charleston Police Officers responded to a fight call on the parking lot of the Charleston Moose Lodge at 2805 Kanawha Boulevard. As the first deputy arrived he saw vehicles leaving the parking lot, then heard several shots fired. People then fled quickly in vehicles and those on foot ran to vehicles or back toward the Moose Lodge.
Two victims later arrived at Charleston Area Medical Center: General Division. Both were transported by personal vehicles, not by ambulance. One victim, Jerome C. Gooch (28 years old of Charleston), had been shot in the leg. The second victim, Shawn Jackson (28 years old of Cleveland, OH), had injuries sustained in the fight, but was not shot. Both victims are cooperating with the investigation.
The event at the Charleston Moose Lodge was a private party. The event was not sanctioned by West Virginia State University. Neither victim was a student at WVSU.
