November 14, 2017: Suspicious Substance on Money

On Sunday, November 12, 2017 two employees of the Dollar General Store in Rand, WV, were transported to Thomas Memorial Hospital after experiencing shortness of breath and dizziness.  Both said they handled cash which felt as though it was coated in an oily substance.  Neither was transported by ambulance.  They were taken by a friend and family member, respectively.

A Deputy Sheriff was dispatched to the hospital to meet with them and later spoke with store management, as well.  His documentation was not initially logged internally at the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, and was not recorded through Metro 911, which led staff members of the Sheriff’s Office and Metro 911 to believe Deputies were not involved.  I apologize for this error.

During his investigation the Deputy Sheriff attempted to view surveillance footage but was unable.  The bills had already returned to circulation through other transactions, and were not able to be examined.  Medical tests revealed no substances in the bodies of the employees which may have been linked to their symptoms.  Both patients were discharged Sunday evening after being examined and their symptoms abated.  The investigation was closed that night.

There have been no other similar incidents since.
