School Resource Officer

Some of the most influential deputies of the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office are our school resource officers.  Assigned to Kanawha County high schools and middle schools, these officers are much more than cops in the classroom.  They act as role models to students, offer a helping hand to teachers and staff, and provide peace of mind to parents who see violence at schools on the nightly news.

Although they are thoroughly trained on responding to violence in schools, most of the school resource officers’ time is spent building relationships with students and deterring delinquent or criminal acts, like underage drinking, drug and alcohol abuse, and domestic violence.  They keep offices in the schools, and often attend extracurricular activities (sporting events, concerts, etc.).   These deputies maintain excellent relationships with the teachers, principals, and counselors; working together to keep students on a path to success and further education.
