January 9, 2016: Recurring Phone Scam

Deputy Sheriffs with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office are again receiving reports of a scam.  Suspects are calling people in the area, claiming to be with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office or another law enforcement agency, and demanding money.  They accuse the victims of not showing up for jury duty, court appearances, or some other violation.  They offer the victim a chance to pay these fake fines over the phone by purchasing gift or money cards, or wiring money.

These recurring calls are illegal and untrue.  If you owe court costs and fines we recommend you call local courts to find out how much and how to pay.  Use published phone numbers.  Don’t trust the word of those who call you alone.  Verify what is being told you by calling a valid phone number or going to the courthouse in person.

If you’ve been the victim of one of these fraudulent phone calls, please contact your local law enforcement agency, or dial the non-emergency phone line for Metro 911, 304-357-0191.
