On January 4, 2017 Deputies with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office responded to CAMC General Hospital to investigate a report of a possible child abuse incident. A 33 day old infant had been transported by Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority medics from the Family Care Health Center located in St. Albans, to CAMC General Hospital because the infant was in respiratory distress and had broken ribs. The infant was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit due to her condition.
Kanawha County Detective responded to the hospital and assisted with the investigation. A medical examination was conducted on the infant. The infant had numerous fractured ribs and a punctured lung. Medical staff advised Detectives that the injuries to the infant were caused as a result of abuse and not a medical disorder or accidental trauma.
Katelyn Berger, the mother of the infant, was previously arrested and charged with child abuse causing injury and with child neglect causing injury.
Deputies are currently looking for the father of the infant – Khalib Austin Grass, 19 years old. A warrant was issued charging Mr. Grass with child neglect resulting in injury, stemming from this incident. Anyone with any information on the whereabouts of Khalib Austin Grass is asked to call 304-357-0169, submit a tip on our website at www.kanawhasheriff.us, or send an email to email@example.com.
As is always the case in criminal matters, the charge against Mr. Grass is merely an accusation. He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
Attached are a few photographs of Mr. Grass.
