SCAM ALERT

Scam Alert: Bail and Bond Fraud Targeting Local Families

Sgt. Coleman of the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office wants to warn our community about a scam that has recently surfaced in our area. Scammers are calling family members of people who have RECENTLY been arrested, pretending to be law enforcement officers, and demanding money for bond, classes, or deferral programs.

In one case, a Cross Lanes resident was contacted by someone posing as a deputy from another county and was scammed out of money after her daughter’s arrest.

In a separate incident today, a suspect’s family member in Milton was contacted by someone pretending to be from #KCSO and pressured to pay for his release.

Law enforcement agencies in West Virginia DO NOT CALL AND DEMAND PAYMENT OVER THE PHONE for bond or any type of release program.

Bonds are ONLY ACCEPTED IN PERSON by a Magistrate or Court Clerk.

If you receive a call like this, hang up and contact the agency directly using a verified phone number or call 911.
