Training

The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for meeting minimum standards for law enforcement officers set by the State of West Virginia Law Enforcement Training Committee.  However, the agency exceeds those standards annually.  Deputy Sheriffs and other members of the agency are routinely sent to training provided by nationally recognized instructors and organizations.

The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office also hosts training for other agencies at its headquarters.  The training center consists of a lecture room, simulator room, and break room.  The 48 seat lecture room boasts tiered seating, a Wi-Fi network, and state-of-the-art presentation equipment.  The simulator room holds a driving simulator and judgment shooting simulator, with a partitioned control room.  Simulation training affords a low-maintenance, high-safety training option that can be used in a variety of ways.  The training center is available for use by other government and law enforcement agencies for courses.

The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office also operates an outdoor firearm range. The range includes a twelve firing point pistol range, rifle range, reaction range, modifiable shoot house, and its own classroom building which is used for lectures, weapons training, defensive tactics, and other training.

These facilities are utilized by the Office’s K9, bomb squad, and SWAT teams for monthly training and recertification.  The Sheriff’s Office also maintains a team of motor vehicle crash reconstructionists, and instructors in most law enforcement related disciplines to conduct training for officers from our office and around the State of West Virginia.
