Meet K9 Ruben

K9 Ruben is a five-year-old Labrador trained in tracking and explosives detection. He’s logged multiple successful tracks over the years and has assisted with explosive sweeps for concerts, major events, graduations, and the Governor’s inauguration.

Ruben joined the Sheriff’s Office in September 2022. Just two days after finishing his handler course, before he ever worked his first shift, he was called out and successfully tracked a suspect who had run from a deputy.

He is handled by Sgt. Lyons, Commander of the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office K9 Division. Ruben is certified through the West Virginia Police Canine Association (WVPCA), the International Police Working Dog Association (IPWDA), and the ATF’s National Odor Recognition Test.

K9 Ruben serves with precision, determination, and a nose you can always count on. We’re proud to have him on the team.
