Kanawha County Deputy Pursues and Arrests Fleeing DUI Driver
ELKVIEW, WV – Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office deputies were involved in a vehicle pursuit on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at approximately 9:30 p.m.
Corporal Crosier attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a black Chevrolet Silverado after observing the vehicle swerving across the center lines on North Pinch Road in the Elkview area. The driver failed to stop and fled, leading deputies onto Prairie Hills Road.
The pursuit ended when the vehicle left the roadway, entered a ditch, and became stuck.
The driver exited the vehicle and fell to the ground. He was identified as Wilbur Lee Johnson, 56, of Elkview, West Virginia, and was taken into custody.
Deputies noted Mr. Johnson had slurred speech and an odor of alcohol on his breath. He refused to submit to a preliminary breath test, standardized field sobriety tests, and a secondary chemical breath test.
Mr. Johnson was charged with DUI – 2nd Offense, and Fleeing While DUI. He is currently housed at South Central Regional Jail on a $10,000 bond, with 10% cash permitted.
Anybody that is arrested is to be presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
