2025 Deputy of the Year Nominees

Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office – 2025 Deputy of the Year Nominees
These deputies don’t do this job for recognition. They show up, handle the work, and serve this county because that’s what they signed up to do. Sheriff Crawford and Chief Snuffer believe it’s important to publicly commend these nominees and recognize the dedication, professionalism, and commitment they bring to the citizens of Kanawha County every day.

Lt. JM Vernon
With more than 20 years of service, Lt. Vernon brings experience that can’t be taught. As a senior member of the SWAT team, he operates at the highest level during critical incidents. He also represents the Sheriff’s Office alongside federal agencies and task forces, ensuring KCSO is trusted, respected, and well-represented beyond county lines.

Cpl. RS Alford
Cpl. Alford serves as a detective in the Criminal Investigative Section and as a polygraph examiner. His leadership and investigative skill have directly contributed to multiple arrests, helping move complex cases forward and supporting fellow detectives when it matters most.

Cpl. TS Dubiel
In 2025 alone, Cpl. Dubiel served 112 warrants and consistently ranked among the department’s leaders in arrests, reports taken, and calls for service. As a Field Training Officer, he sets the tone for newer deputies by leading from the front and expecting the same work ethic he gives every shift.

Cpl. MD Burdette
With nine years on the department, Cpl. Burdette serves as both a Field Training Officer and a member of the Honor Guard. He is known for treating everyone, deputy or civilian, with professionalism, patience, and compassion, even in situations where it would be easier not to.

Deputy BL Kay
Deputy Kay is known for his strong work ethic, reliability, and preparation. He serves as a field training officer and other deputies routinely look to him for guidance.  He willingly steps into a mentoring role without being asked. He consistently goes beyond what is expected and does it without needing recognition.

Deputy WC Hill
Deputy Hill has six years of service and a strong command of criminal law, motor vehicle code, and case law, along with the ability to apply that knowledge in real-world situations. He serves on both the SWAT and Dive Teams, is a Field Training Officer, and is widely respected for his honesty, integrity, and professionalism.

Deputy AL Nichols
Assigned to Judicial Services, Deputy Nichols is also a member of the Crash Reconstruction Team and regularly works Highway Safety and DUI patrols. His work directly contributes to safer roadways and accountability for dangerous driving behavior in Kanawha County.

We’re proud to recognize these nominees and the standard of service they represent every day.

The winner will be announced on February 19, 2026 at the Kanawha County Commission Meeting.
