New Scam
Scammers are using the internet to see who is currently incarcerated. They then call you pretending to be your loved one from jail and claim you must pay a “Pretrial Diversion Fee” immediately or they’ll sit in jail another 60–90 days before being released.
THAT’S THE SCAM!
There is no surprise phone payment to avoid extra jail time.
Red flags:
• Pressure to act immediately
• Requests for gift cards
• Wire transfers
• Cryptocurrency
• CashApp, Venmo, or other money apps
NONE OF WHICH CAN BE USED AS A FORM OF PAYMENT WITH THE COURTS OR JAILS!
If you get this call, HANG UP. Do not send money.
Feel free to verify by calling our office directly at (304) 357-0169 if you believe you are being scammed.
