Name Released in Work Zone Fatality Crash on I-79

The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of the person killed in a crash Friday night on Interstate 79 in Elkview.

At approximately 11:38 p.m. on Friday, September 18, 2026, a Chevrolet Silverado was traveling southbound on I-79 near the 9-mile marker when it exited the roadway and entered a construction zone.

The Silverado struck the rear of a parked dump truck, ejecting the driver, identified as Thomas Edward Wines, 47, of Charleston, WV. Wines was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The unoccupied Silverado then re-entered the roadway, where it was struck by a southbound Toyota RAV4. The driver and passenger of the RAV4 were not injured.

The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office Reconstruction Team is investigating the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
