FOIA Requests

Please complete the form below to submit a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for records maintained by the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, pursuant to West Virginia Code §29B-1-3. The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office is only responsible for providing records related to incidents that were handled and investigated by the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office does not govern, oversee, or maintain records for other law enforcement agencies within Kanawha County and does not have access to records maintained by those agencies. Any requests for records held by other law enforcement agencies must be submitted directly to the respective agency.

Notice Regarding FOIA Requests
Not all requested records are subject to public disclosure. Records or portions thereof may be redacted or withheld if disclosure is prohibited or limited by law, including exemptions under the West Virginia Freedom of Information Act, W. Va. Code § 29B-1-4, or other applicable state or federal law. The release of any record or portion thereof shall not constitute a waiver of any applicable exemption or privilege.

By submitting this request, you acknowledge and understand that the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office may assess reasonable fees limited to the actual cost of reproducing records, as authorized under West Virginia Code §29B-1-3(e)

Fees will not be waived for educational purposes.

FOIA requests for any agency other than the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office will need to be made to that specific law enforcement agency. We are only able to provide information on cases that our office handles.
